My top tips for including your dog in your session

One of the biggest questions I get from clients is, “Can I bring my dog?” That’s a totally valid question! I know each photographer will have their own opinions on this. Personally, I love including fur children in your family portraits. They’re family too! Planning for bringing your dog can be a bit overwhelming though. I’m here to help!! Below, I’m sharing my top tips for including your dog in your session.

“A tired dog is a happy dog.”

This is an old phrase and I find it generally holds true! Try to take your pup on a walk or play a few rounds of fetch before your session. This will allow your dog to get rid of any excess energy and they’re more likely to listen and sit for photos.

Bring treats or a favorite toy

Having something to help motivate your pup is extremely helpful. Small treats, such as training treats, are great to have your children hold to encourage your dog to look at them for some sweet images of them together. Also, a favorite toy can be handy for me to utilize in order to get your pup to look at the camera.

Bring a pup wrangler

It can be so helpful to bring along a friend or family member to be in charge of your pup. This is especially true if your session includes very young children. There will be times where you will want an image without your dog or the leash in your hand. There may also be times where your pup is bored or just curious and needs to walk a lap to explore. Bringing someone along to help out in those moments is a great idea!

I hope this was helpful for you! In the end, you know your pup best so be sure to do what will make them happiest and well behaved before your session. If you’d like for me to document your family’s memories while including your dog in your session, I’d love for you to contact me HERE!
