What is the Best Time of Day for Your Studio Newborn Session?

Ever wonder why some photos have that magical glow? The secret isn’t just the photographer—it’s all about timing! But here’s the beautiful thing about a studio newborn session: while outdoor photographers are constantly checking weather apps and chasing the perfect light, studio sessions offer something even better—consistency and control.

That said, timing still matters for your Indianapolis newborn photography session, just for different reasons. The right time of day can make the difference between a peaceful, dreamy session and a challenging one. From baby’s sleep schedule to sibling cooperation, choosing the optimal time helps ensure your studio newborn session captures those precious early days exactly as you’ve imagined. Let me share why I recommend 10am for most studio newborn sessions and how to make the most of your session time.

The Perfect Time for Your Studio Newborn Session: Why 10am is the Sweet Spot

After photographing hundreds of newborn sessions, I’ve found that 10am is the ideal time for most families. Here’s why this timing works so beautifully:

For Your Newborn: By 10am, most babies have had their morning feed and are settling into a natural sleep cycle. They’re not overly tired from being up too long, but they’ve also had enough time to wake up and eat. This is crucial for a studio newborn session because we want baby as content and sleepy as possible for those peaceful, curled-up poses.

For Toddlers and Older Siblings: If you’re including your other children in your studio newborn session, 10am hits that sweet spot between breakfast energy and afternoon meltdowns. Most toddlers are happiest mid-morning—they’ve had breakfast, maybe some playtime, but haven’t hit that pre-nap grumpy phase yet. This timing helps ensure your older children are cooperative and cheerful during the studio newborn session.

For the Studio Lighting: The natural light from my studio windows at 10am adds a soft, subtle, gorgeous glow. As a natural light photographer this is the ideal setting! Lighting affects the final look of your images tremendously. Without that soft, glowy natural light, your images will not look like the ones in my portfolio you desire.

For Parents: Let’s be honest—those first weeks with a newborn are exhausting. A 10am studio newborn session gives you time to feed baby, get everyone dressed without rushing, have professional hair and makeup, and arrive feeling relatively human. You’re not trying to squeeze in a session before your first coffee or during that chaotic dinner-and-bedtime hour.

Of course, every family is different! If your baby is consistently up late and sleeps in, or if you have specific scheduling needs, we can absolutely adjust the timing of your studio newborn session. The beauty of studio work is flexibility.

Why Studio Sessions Beat the Weather Every Time

Here’s one of my favorite advantages of a studio newborn session: weather doesn’t really matter.

Have you ever had to reschedule an outdoor photo session because of rain? Or dealt with wind, bugs, or unexpected temperature drops? With a studio newborn session, you never have to worry about any of that. Whether it’s freezing or unbearably hot outside, inside my studio it’s always the perfect temperature with perfect lighting. Occasionally it is so stormy the light will not work, but it’s very rare and usually something we can work around.

This reliability is especially important for studio newborn sessions since they need to happen within those first two weeks of life when babies are sleepiest and most flexible for posing. You can’t exactly tell a newborn to wait until the weather clears! My studio setup means we can capture those precious early moments regardless of what Mother Nature has planned.

The controlled environment of a studio newborn session also means I can fine-tune every detail—the softness of the light, the warmth of the room, the music playing in the background—all to create the most peaceful experience for your baby.

Making the Most of Your Studio Newborn Session Time

Want to ensure your studio newborn session goes as smoothly as possible? Here are my insider tips:

Before Your Session:

  • Try to keep baby awake for an hour or so before arriving. A bath or some gentle playtime can help.
  • Give baby a full feed just before you leave home or immediately when you arrive at the studio.
  • Avoid caffeine for 24 hours before your studio newborn session if you’re breastfeeding—it can make baby wakeful and fussy.
  • If including siblings, talk to them beforehand about what to expect. Let them know it’ll be fun and that I’m a mom too who loves to play!

Timing Around Siblings: If your older children are part of your studio newborn session, we can be strategic about when they join us. Sometimes I’ll start with just baby for the sleepy, posed portraits, then have siblings arrive toward the end for family shots. This keeps toddlers from getting bored during the longer newborn poses.

What to Wear: The beauty of a studio newborn session is that you don’t have to worry about dressing for the weather or seasons. Focus on soft, neutral tones that complement the timeless aesthetic of studio work. I have a client wardrobe available with beautiful dresses and robes specifically chosen for studio newborn sessions. Check out my styling guide for more tips on choosing the perfect outfits!
