An Indianapolis Motherhood Photographer’s Top 5 Tips For Making Your Photography Session Easier

Preparing Your Children

A little foreshadowing goes a long way! Talk to your children about how much fun we are going to have. Let them know how excited I am to meet them! Walking into a new unknown space can be a bit scary for a child, and pointing a camera at them can add to that anxiety! Help them prepare for what is about to happen and keep it up beat. Let them know we are about to have such a great time playing and taking pictures together!

Nap Time

If your children are of napping age, ensure they get a good nap before your session. This may mean moving your schedule around a bit but I promise it is worth it! Having your toddler well rested will ensure the best mood possible which will help us create the best images possible for your family!

Roll With It Mama!

Children will be children! Be ready to roll with whatever happens. Young children are especially sensitive to our energy. If they sense frustration, things can go south quickly. If we all stay upbeat and excited, we’re more likely to have happy children! Also, if your child is timid at first and needs held and snuggled, well that just makes for some of my favorite images. It’s real and likely true to your child’s nature. If you continue to smile and stay positive we can create some beautiful motherhood images. I’d bet after a bit your child will acclimate and be ready to play and smile!

Look For Moments To Connect

I want you to be intentionally affectionate! Hold hands, nuzzle together, give eskimo kisses, and snuggle up close. Those sweet moments are what really show your family’s personality! Does dad love to play peek a boo or chase the kids, or does your toddler enjoys playing with your necklace or bear hugging your leg, maybe your older child enjoys reading to their sibling, or maybe they love giving hugs? Both the sweet calm moments and the fun playful moments have their time to naturally happen during your session. Those are the moments we really want to document!

Rewards

While I love for families to plan a reward for after the session, I would highly suggest making that a surprise. If your child knows they get ice cream after the session, I can almost guarantee you they will be done with the session 5 minutes in and be ready for their ice cream! I would highly suggest choosing small snacks for rewards that won’t turn their mouths funny colors or melt on their clothing. Some of my favorites are puffs and small white marshmallows. Your child can hold a marshmallow during a photo and the world will have no idea! You can also bring their favorite lovey. Bonus points if its a neutral color!

I hope that these 5 tips help to make your next photography session easier! If you would like more help or information please feel free to reach out. I’m happy to help however I can!
